In this breathtaking mystery debut, marine biologist–turned-divemaster Meredith Cavallo stands accused of a chilling crime after a dive gone wrong. But do the murky circumstances point to an accident, a murder, or a supernatural encounter?

Mer thought adjusting to a laid-back life in the Florida Keys would be a breeze. But when she rescues a floundering diver who claims to have seen a ghost, she’s caught in a storm of intrigue. News of the encounter explodes on social media, attracting a team of ghost hunters who want to capture proof that a greenish ghoul haunts Key Largo’s famed USS Spiegel Grove shipwreck.

Meredith knows the wreck inside and out, and agrees to act as their safety diver. When Ishmael, the charismatic leader of the group, vanishes during a midnight dive, everyone except Mer is convinced the ghost has claimed another victim. Topside, the tenacious detective in charge of the investigation finds Mer’s involvement in both incidents suspicious, and her enigmatic neighbor resurrects ghosts from her past.

Determined to find a rational explanation, Mer approaches Ishmael’s disappearance as any scientist would—by asking questions, gathering data, and deducing the truth. But the victim’s life is as shrouded in mystery as his disappearance. Still, something happened under the water and before long, she’s in over her head. When someone tries to kill her, she knows the truth is about to surface. Maybe dead men do tell tales after all.

I've actually met Micki before. Out of the blue I looked her up on social media and discovered she'd written a book. I was intrigued so I decided to check it out.

I barely set down my Kindle for the next couple days. She had me completely engrossed from start to finish. The reader gets drawn in, and like all good mysteries your mind works to try and put together all the pieces as you attempt to figure out who or what was behind these events. Not only does she effortlessly weave in humor and sassy dialogue, but she pulls off a couple neat technical tricks. There are several scenes that take place during dives. Committing to action taking place where minimal sounds can be heard and the characters can't talk requires a bit of technical skill. In this novel it's pulled off to great effect.

When I was looking for a new book to read lately I wanted a police procedural or something similar. That's definitely not what this is. Mer is a scientist. The only mysteries she seems to concern herself with are ones relating to her chosen field... in Adrift she feels thrust into the middle of a strange situation and she does her best to make sense of it.

It's a very satisfying read and I'm definitely ready for the next installment.

Adrift A Mer Cavallo Mystery eBook Micki Browning Reviews

Mysteries don't get much better than this. Browning draws the reader in, feeds us a line, and BOOM, we're hooked. Fantastic!
This mystery is the perfect summer read. Actually, it's set in the Florida Keys, so it'd be a perfect winter read, too, if you want to escape the cold. Mer Cavallo is a research scientist working as a diver in the Keys. She's drawn into a mystery surrounding a group of paranormal researchers when she saves a man who travels an unreal distance while diving. The story is fast-moving, with a beautiful setting, layered characters, and an intriguing plot. I am looking forward to this author's next book!
I found this book to be quite good. I didn't know who did what til the very end. That's the kind of book that makes for a good read.
I had a hard time putting this book down and read it over 2 days. I dive the Spiegel Grove often and I was able to visualize the ship and the dives described in the book (I have seen the Snoopy logo on the floor many times). The characters and descriptors of Keys life reminded me of those I have met and experienced in The Keys. The book is fast paced and keeps the readers attention. The writer has enlisted excellent resources to ensure that technical information was accurate. I can't wait for the next book.
I was disappointed in this work that struck me as strongest in some of its characterization and much weaker in terms of a plot that seemed an exercise in the obvious. My favorite element was some, but certainly not all, of the characterization. I enjoyed the character of the protagonist--from her total social awkwardness and her willingness to lecture anyone from her extensive knowledge at the drop of a hat, whether or not the listener had any interest in hearing what she had to say, to her take-charge demeanor late in the book. I also enjoyed her relationship with the Captain of the boat on which she worked. They got along marvelously, even though he had zero qualms about shutting her up whenever she began to prose on. Even so, wasn't she lucky to have a policeman brother willing to break the law repeatedly to help her and a Special Forces(?) ex-boyfriend who both clearly wanted to get back together and could save her life at need?
Their names are Micki Browning and Dr. Mer Cavallo! Micki Browning won all sorts of well deserved awards as an "Unpublished Author" and then was "discovered" by a multitude of agents and publishing houses. This, the first "fruit of her labor" is really difficult to put down. She captures investigative skills (learned as a police captain) along with SCUBA diving (she's an avid diver) drama. I put here right up there with Cussler, Patterson, Palmer and a host of other writers of this genre. Read the book....you won't be disappointed. Now I have to wait for her next novel. .
Mer Cavallo is a marine scientist who is working as a diving instructor in Key Largo while waiting for her next research assignment. Mer saves a diver who has a panic attack after believing he saw a ghost underwater. This attracts a paranormal team who want to make a documentary of the ship wreck where the man claims to have seen the ghost and Mer ends up working as part of the dive crew. Disaster strikes and one member of the team doesn’t make it out of the water. We follow Mer as she tries to find out what happened. I enjoyed this debut novel by Micki Browning. The story is intriguing and there is a great cast of characters that make the book even more enjoyable. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.
